I-35W Maintenance of Traffic
Project Overview
This project was part of a larger initiative by MnDOT to reconstruct and enhance I-35W from 36th Street to I-94 in Minneapolis, with diverse objectives including added lanes, pavement and bridge preservation, construction of the Lake Street Transit Station, and improved bicycle and pedestrian access.
Our Work
Isthmus was tasked with developing the maintenance of traffic (MOT) plan to support the roadway reconstruction project on I-35W, one of the key arteries feeding into and out of downtown Minneapolis. Temporary alignments were defined and preliminary models constructed for all five phases of the construction, with subgrade, earthwork quantification, retaining walls, noise walls, ramps, intersections, driveways, and barriers included.
Isthmus led the design of the 30+ detour routes on the project. This included local and regional detours to aid the traveling public while certain sections of the project were under reconstruction. The detours included both vehicular and pedestrian routes. Special sign panels were created utilizing SignCAD for guidance to travelers in certain areas where additional destination information was needed due to the detours.
