Traffic

Traffic

The Isthmus Traffic practice encompasses Traffic Engineering, Signing and Pavement Marking, and Traffic Control. These disciplines work together to help ensure the safe and systematic movement of the traveling public.

  • Traffic Engineering lays the foundation for roadway geometrics.
  • Signing regulates, warns, and guides drivers and pedestrians on roadways. Pavement Marking provides additional guidance to drivers in complement with the roadway signing.
  • Traffic Control supports the safe movement of traffic and pedestrians through and around construction zones as well as providing safe work areas for construction personnel.

Areas of Specialty

Traffic Engineering
Traffic operations and safety analysis are critical elements in any transportation project. Our Traffic team understands and helps our clients capably navigate all traffic analysis — from early planning through final design and implementation. Our knowledge of software and relational data allows us to consistently deliver insightful technical and data analysis to support informed decision-making in a fast-changing and increasingly complex traffic analysis environment. This includes Traffic Modeling and Simulation (VISSIM, Synchro), Traffic Analysis, Safety and Crash Analysis, and Traffic Signal Design.

Signing and Pavement Marking
Signing and Pavement Marking are the regulatory, directional, and informational guidance we provide for the traveling public to get them safely from “point A to point B" in a vehicle, on a bicycle, or on foot. Sign placement and panel messaging are important elements to safely guide drivers along their routes. Our team works on a wide variety of signing and pavement marking projects in both rural and urban settings as well as for complex roadway features including roundabouts and reduced conflict intersections. These projects include placement of standard signs and delineators/markers, design of guide sign panels, and I-Beam, monotube, and overhead sign design. Our team’s designs are based on requirements in the MnMUTCD, MnDOT Traffic Engineering Manual, typical drawings, and client preferences. Signing and pavement marking are often impacted by changes to signal and lighting placement, sidewalk and entrance access point modifications, bridge and structure details, and the desires of adjacent communities and businesses. Our agile and nimble team has responded to geometric design changes that occurred late in the design process and with very tight schedule constraints.

Traffic Control
Our capabilities include developing detour plans where traffic is guided with temporary signage around construction zones and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans where projects are constructed under traffic. In either case, we collaborate across the project team to ensure that the traffic control plans are in sync with the construction staging plans and that they reflect any design updates. We have prepared traffic control plans for projects ranging from rural highways to complex urban interchanges, as well as for a chain of roundabouts.
